Theology In Action

Scripture

"In wisdom you made them all, the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number - living things both large and small... When you send your Spirit, they are created and you renew the earth."
                                                                -- Psalms 104:25,30

God created the Earth and all living things within it. It states that, "When you send your Spirit, they are created and you renew the earth," which relates to the Reign of God and how when the Reign of God comes, the earth will be peaceful and all will be better. Humans need to initiate the Reign of God here on earth because it is here, we just need to work towards it through the reducing of pollution, like noise pollution.

Matthew Fox

In his book, Creation Spirituality: Liberating Gifts for the People of the Earth, Matthew Fox, a well known religious-spiritual teacher/theologian, he states that, “Creation is all space, all time—all things past, present, and future.” (8) Therefore, creation includes everything that God ever made, like the ground Earth and the abundant wildlife that live among humans upon the Earth. As ambassadors and stewards of the Earth, human beings naturally have the inclination to protect and sustain for all things made by God. Our stewardship is necessary to keep the world alive and bright, instead of cloudy and polluted as it is now. We should not let the Earth become littered with environmental hazards, to the point that we are killing ourselves and those around us. Noise pollution is one of those environmental hazards. The unnecessary sounds we cause through our means of transportation and industries are causing all of creation to slowly disappear. When their environments and habitats become inhabited with such a drastic increase in noise, animals do not have a way to tune it out, instead their systems of communications are inferred and many die due to complications. Thus, we, as humans, are oppressing our fellow creatures among the Earth, by not taking responsibility to help them by creating a better environment for them. We need to liberate the animals and plants from the litter and pollution that we have imposed upon them.

Sallie McFague

In addition, an ecological theologian named Sallie McFague, stated, in her book Super, Natural Christians, that, “We now know that human systems, especially economic ones, are inextricably interlocked with natural ones. A ‘social ecology’ defines the human/nature relationship in such profound ways that justice and liberation for the one are intrinsically bound up with justice and liberation for the other. Unless the natural world is healthy, it cannot provide the basics of life for the poor; and unless all of us, especially the privileged of the first world, limit our energy use, the natural world cannot be healthy.” (13-14) McFague tells us that if our environment is not at peace and healthy, then we cannot be at peace and healthy. She says that when our environment becomes unhealthy, it cannot provide for the poor, so therefore, when we hurt the Earth by littering and polluting, we are, in turn, hurting ourselves even more. There is only one Earth for us to live on, and when it is gone, humans will be gone along with it. It is our humanly duty to protect all of God’s creations, including the rivers, streams, animals, plants, and our whole entire planet. We can start by reducing the extreme amounts of noise pollution that are killing vast numbers of wildlife and plant life, through destroying ecosystems and the chains of energy sources on which living things need to survive. We need to improve our social ecology, which is our relationship between us and nature, by reducing the amount of noise pollution in the world.

Action!

Here are five ways on how to start fight noise pollution now:

1.       Become more educated about the issue!

2.       Create a noise pollution program in your community to reduce the noise pollution where you live.

3.       Join noise pollution activists on expeditions to protect habitats of endangering species.

4.       Support the uses of quieter technology in our oceans and lands. (Use canoes instead of jet skis!)

5.        Do your part and SPREAD THE WORD!
